What's a micromort?
A micromort is a one-in-a-million chance of dying. It’s the unit for acute risk — a skydive, an operation, a stretch of driving. You only spend them.
What's a microlife?
A microlife is 30 minutes of life expectancy gained or lost. It’s the unit for chronic habits — a cigarette, a coffee, half an hour of exercise. You bank or burn them.
Where do the numbers come from?
The curated database draws on published risk research — David Spiegelhalter’s work on risk, Spiegelhalter & Pearson’s “Microlives” (BMJ, 2012), and standard transport and public-health statistics. Each entry names its source. The figures are population averages for sense-of-scale reasoning, not personalized risk.
Does Micromorts track me or use the internet?
No. This version makes no network calls at all, has no analytics, and requests no permissions — no camera, location, health data, or notifications. The risk database ships inside the App. See the Privacy Policy for specifics.
Is the Ledger my actual risk?
No. The Ledger’s tallies are illustrative sums of population-average values — a thinking tool, not a measurement of your real mortality risk or life expectancy. See the Terms of Use for the full disclaimer.
How do I clear my Ledger?
Open Settings → Clear Ledger in the App. That removes every logged entry from your device. Uninstalling the App also deletes everything.
Is my data backed up?
No. Your Ledger lives on your device only — there’s no account and no cloud. Uninstalling the App permanently deletes it, so treat the device as the only copy.
Does Micromorts use HealthKit?
Not in this version. Automatic HealthKit import — workouts, steps, and sleep contributing to microlives — is a feature I may add later. If I do, it will be opt-in and the Privacy Policy will be updated to describe it.
How much does Micromorts cost?
This version is free, with no in-app purchases or subscriptions. If that ever changes, I’ll update the Terms first.
Is this medical advice?
No. Micromorts is an educational tool. Every figure is a population-average estimate — real risk depends on age, health, skill, and circumstance. Don’t make medical or safety decisions based solely on the App.
